What are the most important or favorite words or phrases that you try to pick up when youre attempting to learn a foreign language?

I try to learn how to ask something about people's family, like, are you married; how many children do you have, etc.. Also, it's good to know how a person of your nationality would be insulted in the other language, that way if you are walking in the street and someone says it to you, you can laugh and then they will assume you understand the language and stop messing with you. :)

Hi, I learn simple things like, Hi my name is, I am Australian, daily greetings like Good morning/day/afternoon/evening/night then numbers, days of the week and then basic grammar.
