That sentence is incorrect.
You can ask "What am I eating?"
You could also say, "What is it that I am eating?" but this is just a longer version of the above. Hope this helps :)

What is this? - might be better...
or if you are sharing a meal "What is this called?" "What is this called... that we are eating"
"What do you call this food?"
It's tricky.
What were you eating? - I wonder.

It is perfectly correct!
[What I am eating] is a noun clause.
Therefore:
What is [what I am eating]?....is perfectly correct.
