What is 'basic science'? What is 'basic science'? I asked Donald Strong a question about biological invasion, he said that was 'basic science'. (My question probably was: we always try to control something, but the restults are always unexpected. so what if we did nothing to the invasive species?)so what kind of science is higher than 'basic science'? 'Applied science'?

Hi, I reply: why invasive ... what belongs to you, - nothing ... We are in the same boat, buddy

I think D.S. should have used 'basic knowledge' instead of 'basic Science'. 'basic science' or 'pure science' means a set of knowledge (science) that are fundamental, i.e. they don't need to use other sciences for explaining their notions. In this strict sense Mathematics is the purest of the basic sciences; Physics is also a basic science when you include in it the Mathematics that physicists use. Chemistry is not a 'basic science' as its phenomena at their basic level are described by Physics. In an extended meaning 'basic Science' is just kept apart from 'applied science', like Electronic Engineering, or Technology of alloys; in this other meaning Chemistry is a 'basic science'.

Basic science deals with elementary phenomena, where elementary does not mean 'easy', but has the meaning that its object of study are composed of just a few elements: for instance: Newton's great laws of gravitation were formulated studying the interactions of one planet in turn with the sun, (2-bodies systems), and after applied to a several bodies system like the solar system, or to satellite navigation (applied science). Applied science uses the fundamental theories developed by basic science, and applies those theories to complex systems which were to complex to be used while formulating those theories; the science of materials is a good example of this, and it is an applied science that could solve terrific problems related to solar power plants, or making lighter planes, so is giving a big contribution to reduce environment pollution; it has its grounding in both Physics and Chemistry (and of course Math ...).

Basic science is something I nearly failed at in grade school. :P

Basic science is simply science that is easy and uncomplicated. An example of this can be the names of the planets.
