You're right on one thing, The question is silly.
1. Traditional characters are used in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
2. Simplified characters are use in Mainland China and Singapore.
3. A multitude of Chinese ethnic groups in various countries use Traditional characters. The ones you see in Chinatown are Traditional.
Now take your pick.

Im a Chinese and Chinese language teacher live in Beijing, in the mainland China we use simplified Chinese, so if you want to come to mainland China you should sudy simplified Chinese.

I think simplified chinese is much easier to learn and used by a much larger population ( just count the number from mainland China!). It would a better starting point for you. It is not hard to guess the meaning of traditional chinese characters if you know the simplified version.

Take my advice. Study traditional characters. They are esthetically far more beautiful. And this may surprise you, are easier to learn. Get the book:
Heisig: Remembering the Traditional Hanzi
After learning the traditional characters, the simplified ones become automatic!
