Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck We had to study it in school, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading. It is a novella about two ranch workers during the Great Depression in America, and the hardships they and others like them face, and about their dreams for a better life. It is also vaguely based upon the writers own experiences and has been adapted into film many times.
