"I hope the same for you." When is it used?

People say "(the) same to you" to answer a greeting, an insult, etc. "Happy Christmas! - The same to you!" Get lost! - Same to you!

well, probably when something good happens to a person,this person wishes the same to the other person(could be his\her friend,relative...ect)
