How to use articles with "weekend(s)"? Is there any difference in American and British English?
For example: I go to the cinema at (the?) weekends.

The same as with any other noun. Why would there be a difference?

You can use them as with any other noun.
a weekend
spend a weekend in the city
the weekend
Whenever the weekend finds you, hopefully a happy one.
Got plans for the weekend?
In Plural:
weekends
On weekends ...
over weekends...
We plan ahead for the coming weekends.
Differences between American and British English is :
on the weekend ( American)
at the weekend ( British)
