In old Turkey, there was a custom of naming a child only after she/he did a heroic thing. When the baby is born, a temporary name is chosen for it by her/his family. To be given a permanent name he/she had to deserve it. (for example, by learning to shoot arrows, doing a useful thing during a battle, or hunting a bear.) That given name relates to what was done and accomplished . For this reason, after I learned about this custom when I was a kid, I named my parakeet "cicikuş" which means "pretty bird" in English because the first word he said was "pretty bird":)
