Cross (adjective) = angry, annoyed, bad-tempered. Crossness (noun) = anger, annoyance, bad temper. Martha did not mind Mary's annoyance or bad temper. This is from The Secret Garden. It's a lovely book. Are you enjoying it?

It's a British way to express that someone is angry, irritated, annoyed, etc. I think it's fairly old-fashioned.
