About Me

I live in South Africa and I love hearing about different countries and cultures. I have traveled to England, Italy, Portugal, Amsterdam, Spain, France and Australia.
I love the outdoors, hiking in the mountains and walking along the beach.
I have two children, aged 41 and 38 and two grandchildren, aged 13 and 9.Me as a Teacher
I have been teaching children for about 30 years. My specialty is working with children with Special Needs - particularly those who have difficulties with reading, spelling and maths. I am also involved in Adult Education, helping women who are training to be preschool teachers.My lessons & teaching style
I have been working with students on Italki since 2013, and have loved meeting people from all over the world. My approach is to focus on reading a current news item together - which assists with fluency and vocabulary building. We then discuss the topic, giving an opportunity to improve communication skills. We also work on some language exercises that help to consolidate the vocabulary.
I have also had some experience at working with children on Italki - where we have focused on vocabulary building and fluency.

Diploma in Special needs (remedial) - University of Natal South Africa - 1981This was a year long course which could only be done if you had completed a Teaching Diploma or Degree and had at least two years of teaching experience. It enables me to work with learners who have specific learning disabilities and require specialised teaching for language and or maths. I have been working with children in this field since 1982 and have also worked with dyslexic adults.
