About Me
italki teacher since Aug 5, 2019
A friendly tutor from the north of England with a relaxed yet structured approach. I learned my languages as an adult in an area where multilingualism is not exactly widespread! In my spare time I enjoy cycling, walking and reading. I adore nature and I also write poetry.
Me as a Teacher
First and foremost I am a learner who enjoys learning languages as a hobby. So I understand the frustrations and challenges faced by students when they try to mesh the theoretical aspects of acquisition with the realities of speaking practice. I have written a language course for those tackling German and my approach with beginners is to introduce new language in a very structured way and to prioritise patterns above vocabulary, at least at the start. For more advanced students I am happy to select materials based on their interests. I always try to put people at ease and believe that learning should be an enjoyable as well as enriching experience.
My lessons & teaching style
I concentrate on speaking practice. The spoken language is the area where most students feel they want to improve and reading and writing competencies follow. I attempt to elicit language from my students with open questions where possible so that they may draw maximum value from the session. With regard to corrections I attempt to navigate the fine line between ignoring persistent errors that hamper intelligibility and hyper correction which may erode confidence.
