Hallo! My name is Daniel and I am an American who grew up in the Netherlands speaking Dutch. I enjoy talking about travel and culture with people around the world. I've lived in New York for the past 16 years now, raising my daughter and walking my dog. By trade, I am a web programmer but I secretly want to be a cartoonist! Aside from Dutch and English, I understand French and German and (because my daughter and I became anime fans during the pandemic) I have just started learning Japanese. Compared to learning thousands of kanji, I promise you Dutch will be a breeze!Me as a Teacher
I am a TEFL certified instructor with an international baccalaureate in foreign languages. I am new to remote learning but have tutored in-person elementary school students for many years. I like highlighting the commonalities between various languages, and you may find me going on about the history of a word as much as its definition. Please stop me if I do it too much! When speaking Dutch, my American accent may come through at times, but I to compensate I speak slowly and articulately, so you will hear every word.My lessons & teaching style
I teach at 3 levels: Basic level focuses on building vocabulary and everyday expressions; Intermediate level is about understanding grammar; in Advanced we dive into Dutch literature and free, flowing conversation. Every class can be divided into 3 sections: (1) review of previous material; (2) presentation of new material; (3) review of new material, usually through role-play. Homework consists of "fill-in-the-gap"-type exercises and shouldn't take long to complete. I believe immersion is the most effective way to learn a language, but I do start Basic level combining English and Dutch, with the goal of slowly moving to all-Dutch lessons as vocabulary increases. My teaching material
