Conversational English Tutor with 9 years of italki teaching experience. Sheffield-born, Portugal-based, and endlessly passionate about the English language! With 30 years of diverse roles—from acting to customer service—I like to think I've become pretty adept at the art of clear and sophisticated communication. Whether through poetry, comedy, or everyday chats, I thrive on helping learners speak confidently and naturally. As an italki tutor since 2016, I specialise in relaxed, conversation-focussed lessons where mistakes are just stepping stones. Let’s turn your English into a tool for connection—with humour, patience, and most importantly, fun! PLEASE NOTE: I only teach adults over 18 and I don't teach outside my scheduled hours. I’m learning Portuguese, so I know how scary using a second language can be. Back in the UK, I had a lot of experience of correcting letters, emails, reports and presentations: even though I have no formal training as a teacher, I can help if you’re working towards exams or looking for a job – or if you’re simply learning English for pleasure. I'm here to help you master the art of conversational English, to gently point out the right words to use, the proper grammar, the correct pronunciation. I'm not here to criticise or put you under pressure: I want you to enjoy our lessons and above all, have fun! I'm a community tutor, rather than a professional teacher, which means that my lessons are informal and led by you, the student. We can talk about whatever you like: films, music, TV programmes, books, travel, current ...

If you are looking for a teacher who makes learning enjoyable, Dave is your guy. He is incredibly encouraging and easy to talk to. Our class flew by because we had such a fun, natural conversation, and he really knows how to ask the right questions to keep you engaged. I truly look forward to our next sessions together.
