Hi, my name is Lilja, and I am about to finish my PhD in linguistics. I have always been fascinated by grammar and language, and love learning languages that are as different as possible from the ones I know.
I have lived and studied in the UK for 8 years, and by now I speak English at mostly the same level as my native Norwegian. I love travelling, and I have also lived in Argentina, China and Israel, in addition to Norway where I grew up. I have also spent a lot of time in India and Uganda, where I did fieldwork for my research. I love seeing new places, experiencing new cultures, and meeting new people.
Other interests of mine include literature, camping, hiking and nail polish.Me as a Teacher
I have experience with studying languages in a lot of different settings, and in my teaching I apply the methods that have worked best for me. I will adapt the lessons to you, your current level, and your goals. I find the immersion method to be the most effective, so I will aim to teach in the target language from the beginning. If you are just starting out, don't worry, I will adapt the language and vocabulary to your level, so that you understand.
My research background is in both grammar and pronounciation, so I can explain the rules and nuances of Norwegian and English to you, and guide your pronounciation. If you want a deeper understanding, I am always happy to go into the details! My lessons & teaching style
In the lessons, I will use the target language as much as possible, so that you get used to hearing and speaking it. I will help you create flashcards, which I find to be the most effective way to learn vocabulary. For beginners, we can go over the basics, and I will help you be able to have a short conversation in no time. For more advanced learners, we can pracitice speaking, look at different texts, discuss a book, or focus on grammar, depending on what you need. I can also help with academic writing in English.

2022 - Current
Tutor/lecturerFor the last three years I have been a tutor for undergraduate linguistics students at Oxford University, teaching mostly first year undergraduate students.
I also co-lectured a class on Typology along with my supervisor.
2022 - 2024
MentorI participated in the MFL mentoring project for two consecutive years. The project pairs university students studying linguistics or modern languages with Welsh primary school students, in order to deliver session aimed at encouraging the students to pick foreign languages at the GSCE level. The sessions are meant to showcase the personal, academic and professional benefits of multilingualism.

TeacherWhile on my year abroad in China, I had a part time job teaching English. I taught 2-3 classes a week, to small groups of children aged 4 and 8-12.

Doctorate - LinguisticsMy thesis was a description of the verb system of Lugere, a Bantu language spoken in Eastern Uganda. I have submitted the thesis, and I am just waiting for my viva in order to complete the degree.

Master's - LinguisticsMy thesis was a description of the phonology of Uipo, a Tibeto-Burman language spoken in North-East India.

Lilja is very nice and corrects any mistakes I make instantly in a friendly manner. She is great at explaining grammar rules in an easy way and making sure that I get a lot of speaking practice.
I have taken many Norwegian classes over the last few years, both in group settings at language schools but also private lessons, and am very glad that I found Lilja. I feel like I am making more progress than before since her lessons are actually adapted to my level of Norwegian. Every class is interesting and super fun, I always look forward to them!
