A friendly, encouraging and chill teacher who is a native English speaker. 😺My name is John. I'm from The South of the USA. ✨Many people would describe me as a laid back and funny guy. I work hard but don't make things too serious. I believe in following a happy medium in all things, which means making classes not too lax and not too strict, as well as being friendly while maintaining professionality. As a teacher, I enjoy helping YOU to reach your goals in English, Mandarin, Korean, or Yakut. I do my best to help Y'ALL have fun in the process too! If any of you guys have any questions or would like to schedule a time that is not shown on my calendar, feel free to send me a message and ask! *All students can ask me questions about the language they are learning in an italki message outside of classtime and I will answer as soon as I can.* I offer two types of classes: 1. Formal lessons (English, Chinese, Korean, or Yakut). *These are formal lessons of two types* (1) Lessons with personalized materials that I make for you. (2) Lessons where we use an existing curriculum upon request. (Can provide homework for either kind of formal lesson if needed.) 2. Conversation practice (English, Chinese or Korean) These sessions are for guided conversation practice or freetalk style practice. (During the session, I will correct any mistakes if you would like me to. Just let me know during the first lesson if that is what you need.)

Hello! I’m Aztai from China. Nice to meet you! I was born in China and come from the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. I’m bilingual in Chinese and Mongolian. I’m deeply interested in languages and psychology, and I occasionally read professional academic papers. I’m a huge fan of japannese anime---a total otaku! But I also enjoy travelling sometimes. 如果你比起枯燥的模板化教学、更喜欢直接进入语言本身,我们应该会很合得来喔~ I have one year of experience teaching one-on-one online Japanese lessons, and I am a JLPT N1 certified speaker.

Teacher YangYang is amazing! Like many heritage- and heritage-adjacent Chinese speakers, I have been speaking Chinese since I was young, but have long struggled with feeling like my language was stuck at a child’s level and register. Due to life changes, I have recently been motivated to clean up my Chinese, and study for the HSK 7-9 exam. 秧秧老师 is experienced at teaching advanced Chinese, and is very familiar with the requirements at the HSK 7-9 level. Through her instruction, I finally feel empowered to speak and write Chinese with grown-up vocabulary and formal register. She provides highly detailed feedback, targeted assignments, and approaches teaching with resourcefulness and creativity: our study materials have ranged from podcasts about modern culture to The Analects. Thanks to 秧秧老师’s guidance, I am better prepared for my exam, but more importantly, feeling more confident and inspired about my Chinese than ever. I cannot recommend her enough. 谢谢老师!

It has been 3 weeks since I’ve started learning Mandarin with Pei in anticipation for my trip to Taiwan. I truly could not have chosen a better teacher! Pei is extremely kind, encouraging, and patient! After gauging my level and discussing my goals during the trial lesson, she was able to immediately provide me with the perfect learning plan based on my needs; and it has been going flawlessly! I am progressing quickly, and feel that I have built up the confidence I’ll need to communicate with ease during my trip. One thing I love about Pei’s lessons is how immersive they are. She always encourages me to use Mandarin wherever possible, even if I happen to say something in passing that’s unrelated to the lesson. That way, the language rolls off my tongue more naturally. She also teaches me everyday vocab & phrases used in Taiwan that aren’t found in textbooks, which I love! I can't recommend Pei enough!

I have enjoyed working with 小雪 for about a year, as I progressed from HSK3 to HSK6+. She is well read and spontaneously conversational across a wide range of topics spanning from culture to STEM. For example, she was able to correct and guide my production of domain-specific vocabulary in fields ranging from Chinese animated cow film memes, to emergent abilities in LLMs, to Scandinavian pigeon behavior...

My daughter is at a primary school in Singapore. Her school Chinese teacher often scolded her, and she came to dislike Chinese itself. Anna 老师encouraged her so much and gave her practical study tips, and they practised the oral exam and compositions together. In her composition test, she remembered what Anna 老师 had told her. She is much more positive about Chinese now. I highly recommend this teacher to any child who has lost confidence in Chinese.

In the beginning I trialled a few other teachers but stuck to Catherine because I found her lessons the best. I have been learning with Catherine for 6 months and have found her lessons to be engaging and very helpful. She can vary the lessons according to my needs. Initially I was travelling to China, so we did travel related lessons but now I want to improve my conversational skills, so she further adapted the lesson. She sends notes and homework after each lesson which helps me stay disciplined. I highly recommend Catherine as a tutor. Jiāyóu!

I've been studying Mandarin Chinese at the beginner from Maggie for a few months now, and I like the approach she takes. She gives instruction just in Chinese as much as possible, using objects around us and word sheets she's made as chances to introduce vocabulary. She's also willing to explain usage patterns (e.g. grammar, word choice), again in Chinese as much as possible with written examples. Today I managed to describe my weekend to her in Chinese. It took some back and forth, but she used every difficulty as a chance to teach something new.

Recently my schedule has been packed and work keeps me extremely busy, yet just thinking about my Chinese lessons fills me with joy! I feel so, so lucky to have found Jianxin, a truly one-of-a-kind Chinese teacher! For someone like me who tends to bury himself in work, learning Chinese has never felt like a task or a burden. On the contrary, it's become my little escape — a quiet, joyful pause in the middle of a hectic life. I honestly believe that only Jianxin could make learning a language feel this light and magical. In class, her boundless energy and wholehearted dedication to teaching have deeply inspired me, and little by little, they've changed the way I think about learning. For me, studying Chinese isn’t a short-term goal — it’s a journey I want to pursue long-term. Every lesson gives me more than language skills; I soak up her passion and energy, leaving class excited for what’s ahead. I have the deepest admiration for Jianxin — she's truly special!

As a Vietnamese speaker who speaks both English and Vietnamese, I also appreciate that Jenny is fluent in both languages. She can explain Chinese concepts clearly in either English or Vietnamese, which is especially helpful when I have difficulty understanding a particular grammar point or expression. Her ability to explain Chinese from both language perspectives makes learning much easier and more effective. She provides well-structured and easy-to-follow learning materials, which makes it much easier to review and understand each lesson. What I especially appreciate is her ability to understand the challenges I face as a Vietnamese speaker learning Chinese. She recognizes that certain Chinese sounds, grammar structures, and sentence patterns can be confusing from a Vietnamese learner’s perspective. Overall, she is a patient, supportive, and knowledgeable teacher. Her structured approach and clear explanations have helped me build a stronger foundation in Chinese.

今天我们复习了语法和(词(?))。Today, we reviewed grammar and vocabulary. Yasmine was very patient with me when I had forgotten the pronunciation of some characters. First, she would give me a hint; if I still couldn't remember it, she would tell me the word again and and the meaning. I appreciate her calm and patient way of teaching me, because helps me gain the confidence/motivation to practice, instead of avoiding it due to fear of making mistakes. 谢谢老师。
