Some characters actually look like the things they represent. These are called pictographs. For example: 木 (mù) is tree 目 (mù) is eye Most pictographs can also be used as radicals in other characters. For instance, 木 (tree) appears in characters related to wood or plants: 林 (lín —forest), tree plus tree, many trees, so forest 桥 (qiáo — bridge), made of wood 桃 (táo — peach), grow on trees There's also another type: phonetic-semantic characters. In these, one part hints at the meaning, and the other part hints at the pronunciation.
