Hello! I'm a Freelance Illustrator, working mostly with children's books. I have been teaching myself Hindi since January of 2013, but would love to have someone to practice speaking the language. I need someone willing to correct me and help me pronunciation. I volunteer at a Hindu Temple on the weekends and occasionally have help from the Indian community there, but I'd like more regular practice.

    Bollywood films with Hindi Subtitles Hello! Can anyone tell me if there are any Hindi films that also come with Hindi subtitles or closed captioning in Hindi? I can only seem to find films with English and Arabic subtitles. I'd really like to follow along with a film and work on making an association with the sounds of the language to the script. The genre is not important - I'm interested in anything that comes with the Hindi subtitles. Thanks! ____________________ Namaste, Mein Hindi subtitle vali film dund rahi hun.     Use of समझना and समझ आना Hello! I am still a little confused on a very basic phrase in Hindi. If I say to someone, "I understand." Do I say: "मैं समझती हूं." or "मैं समझ आया." or "मैं समझी" ? Or does it matter? Thank you in advance for your help.

    Some people are just so used to having meat in their diet that they think vegetarianism is unnatural. They're wrong to think it's silly or to make fun of people who are vegetarians. They just need to educate themselves on the facts.

    Improving listening skills (Hindi) Hello! I find that my biggest challenge these days is that when I speak to natives in Hindi or when I listen to Hindi audio I still barely catch and understand most of what I hear. I catch about every 2nd or 3rd word but by the time I figure out the meaning is in my head, they're on to the next sentence! It's a little better in conversations because I am engaged in the topic. I've done active listening exercises, but that hasn't seemed to work for me. Does anyone have any advice for improving listening and comprehension skills?

    So, if someone is learning a language like, Hindi, for example,  would one start out with the words in the mind map being in Hindi or along-side their english equivalent? For example, I may know that the Hindi word for dog, cat and horse all belong under the "mammal" catagory, but may not know which word means which in the beginning. Doesn't someone have to have some familiarity of the word definitions before making a map?

    How to Form Short Term Language Goals Hello, I have read that for successful language learning one must develop many small language goals that can be met in a certain amount of time.     Hi Lara, I still get confused by this too, but one thing I try to do is ask myself a question while studying a new verb. "What?" For example: I went to the store.( Mein dukan gayi/a) Vs. I ate a sandwhich. (Mein ne sandwhich khaya) In the first sentence if you ask "I went...what? It doesn't make sense because the subject isn't acting on anything. You went to a *place*. In the second example you are acting on something. "I ate....what? (A sandwich). Like I said, this is still tricky for me too, but I thought I'd share in case it helped. Best of luck! -Ashley
