How fake news does real harm (PART 1) Stephanie Busari is a journalist and editor at CNN International Digital. At TED Talks she gives an insight on how false information can cause real harm. As an example, she provides the story of the Chibok girls. (Chibok is a town in Nigeria). Hundreds of girls were kidnapped by Boko Haram terrorists. Some of them managed to escape by jumping off the truck that was carrying the girls. When landing, some of them broke their limbs or got other injuries. Some will be on medication for the rest of their life. Stephanie and other journalists, who were in Nigeria at that time, put the government under pressure. They asked tough questions about what they were doing to bring these girls back. The authorities gave them alternative facts. Influential Nigerians told them they were naive and didn't understand the political situation in Nigeria. They also told that the story of the Chibok girls was a hoax. This hoax narrative has persisted and still there are people in Nigeria who believe that Chibok girls were never kidnapped. But there are also parents of those girls, devastated families, who ran after the trucks in which their girls were being taken away. Parents were armed with machetes but they were forced to turn back because Boko Haram had guns. For two years there wasn't much heard about these girls on the news. The girls were presumed to be dead. But some time ago, Stephanie obtained a video from Boko Haram as a proof of life of the missing girls. Before publishing this video, Stephanie went back to Nigeria to confirm the veracity of the story. It didn't take long for parents to recognize their daughters in the video. We can only imagine the anguish that parents felt at that moment. PART 2: https://www.italki.com/entry/976697
