This video kick-started negotiation talks with Boko Haram. As a Nigerian senator told, because of this video they entered into negotiation. Before it, they had long presumed the girls were dead. Eventually, twenty one girls were freed. Two hundred of them still remain missing.
Imagine, how many opportunities of saving those girls were wasted. The hoax narrative caused a delay in their return. This illustrates the deadly danger of fake news.
And we have a role to play in providing the truthful information. For example, on Facebook we are the ones who share the content. We are the ones who share stories online. We are all publishers and we have responsibilities. Many of us don't even read beyond the headlines, but share information taken out of context. Stephanie emphasize that we have to start questioning the information we discover online - we should not take everything at face value. What if we start asking some questions, checking the answers and try verifying the story? Maybe this will prevent you from sharing the made-up information that may have real negative consequences.
