One Minute Freestyle Speaking Challenge: Work-Life Balance The goal of my 1 minute podcasts is to have you communicate in a freestyle manner - without criticizing or over analyzing your performance. Additional goal - building up more confidence and improve your story telling skills. Listen to the recording and inspire yourself to speak today! Some idioms to use in today's story: 1. Burning the candle at both ends Refers to working excessively hard, both early and late, leading to exhaustion. 2. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy Suggests that without time off from work, a person becomes both bored and boring. 3. Keeping your nose to the grindstone Indicates staying focused and working hard, but can imply neglecting other important aspects of life. 4. Work hard, play hard Encourages balancing intense work with equally intense leisure activities. 5. Finding the sweet spot Refers to achieving the perfect balance between work and personal life. 5 key realities about learning a second language. 🔍 These realities apply to adult learners and, when understood, will save a lot of time and frustration. 1. It will take a lot longer than you think. ⌛ Depending on the language, the average person needs 600 to 3000 hours of practice over several years to reach fluency in speaking and listening. 2. You will always make mistakes. 🫠 The good news is that native speakers usually don’t mind and are supportive of your efforts. 3. You’ll never feel as fluent as you do in your native language. 🏖️ One major reason is that language is deeply connected to culture. 4. The memorization of lots of grammar rules is a waste of time. 🛑 Native speakers don’t know most of their own grammar. (See Dr. Stephen Krashen’s research on language acquisition.) 5. There is a “language gift.” 💡 Like any skill, language learning comes easier to some. While one person may need 1,000 hours to reach a B1 level, another may only need 200. Learning a second language requires patience and perseverance. But remember, the journey is just as important as the destination. Embrace it and enjoy the ride! 🚀
