My grandmother had to cross a river and walk for 3 hours to go to school when she was my age. She had to take care of her 4 siblings and yet, she is the only one in her entire school smart enough to get into middle school. It was the year 1950 and it was not unusual to be a farmer and such, but it was unusual to be a scholar. Most people had to work very hard to get enough to eat. Parents left their oldest child to take care of the rest. My grandma had to take care of 4 siblings. At school, while other kids played, she read books and did her homework. Only in the dead of night did she have to opportunity to go over what she learned for her siblings are asleep. She once accidentally cut off the tip of her ring finger. Her parents placed the tip to where it was and patched it up, a few days later, grandma was working again. Now, the tip and the rest of the finger had grown together so that you could not see the difference.
