enrolling or enrollment? ...in universities around the nation has more than tripled compared to this time last year. A enroll B enrolls C enrolling D enrolment The asnwer is D. However, I think C may be correct. Is there any difference between enrolling (Gerund) and enrollment? Please let me know your opinion.

You are right but I can see why enrolling sounds correct. The reason why the answer is D "enrollment" is because it is a noun (thing). For me it helps to pick out the key words in each sentence. So, the format of the sentence is: (Enrollment (noun) has (helping verb) tripled (intransitive action verb). This makes it a little easier to see why "enrolling has tripled" doesn't sound quite right because it doesn't sound right to say running (gerund) tripled. I hope that wasn't too confusing. Is this a TOEFL question?
