What's the meaning of "by heart" here?

"By heart" means to memorize something. Example: If you know a poem "by heart," you can say the poem without having to read it from a book.

'By heart' here means learning by rote, exactly and from memory.
Tho the sentence is a bit awkward, maybe, 'Learning English by heart is hard work'
