はい、こんにちは。今回はポッドキャストの31回目です。最近はほとんど一日中クーラーをつけています。食欲も無くなってきたので、そうめんやきゅうりを食べています。今月はいろいろな用事があって忙しかったです。最近はもっと仕事や語学について勉強しようと思っていて、読みたい本がたくさんあるのですが、なかなか読む時間が取れません。最近レッスンで生徒さんに聞いた「機会費用」の話が面白かったので、ベンジャミン・フランクリンの本を読みたいです。

Hello. This my podcast episode 31. These days I have the air-conditioner on almost all day long. I've lost my appetite and I'm eating Somen noodles and cucumbers. I've been busy this month with a lot of different things. Recently I have been trying to learn more about work and languages, and there are many books I want to read, but I can't find the time to read them. I want to read a book by Benjamin Franklin because I recently heard a student talk about 'opportunity cost' in a lesson and it was interesting.

先週ウェビナーが終わりました。ライブ時はコメントや質問がほとんどなかったのですが、実はライブが終わってから数分後に、たくさんのコメントや質問が一斉に送られてきていました。日本では、質問の時間は、最初の一人が質問するまで、まったく質問がない、沈黙の時間があるのが普通です。ところが英語圏では、どんどん質問が飛び出すのが普通です。

The webinar finished last week. There were very few comments and questions during the live session, but in fact, a few minutes after the live session was over, many comments and questions were sent in all at once. In Japan, there is usually a period of silence, with no questions at all, until the first person asks a question. In English-speaking countries, however, it is normal for questions to keep popping up.

当日裏方でウェビナーの操作をしていたitalkiの方は、英語のウェビナーの雰囲気に慣れていました。沈黙が続いたとき、質問がないと思って、私に気を使ってくれて、質問コーナーを早く打ち切りました。こういうところでも文化的な理解の違いがあるんですね。この違いに気づかなかったのは、私の経験不足です。もしまたウェビナーのホストをする機会があったら、この点を改善したいと思います。

今日は日本の方言について話をしてみます。日本は山が多いので、特に方言が多いのではないかと思いますが、どう思いますか？
Today I talked about dialects in Japan. We have so many different dialects in Japan, but I think it's because we have so many mountains (73% of the land) in Japan.

ゴーシュは町の活動写真館でセロを弾く係りでした。
けれどもあんまり上手でないという評判でした。上手でないどころではなく実は仲間の楽手のなかではいちばん下手でしたから、いつでも楽長にいじめられるのでした。

ひるすぎみんなは楽屋にまるくならんで 今度の町の音楽会へ出す第六交響曲の練習をしていました。
トランペットは一生けん命歌っています。
ヴァイオリンも二いろ風のように鳴っています。
クラリネットもボーボーとそれに手伝っています。
ゴーシュも口をりんと結んで 眼を皿のようにして 楽譜を見つめながら もう一心に弾いています。

にわかにぱたっと楽長が両手を鳴らしました。
みんなぴたりと曲をやめてしんとしました。楽長がどなりました。
「セロがおくれた。トォテテ　テテテイ、ここからやり直し。はいっ。」
みんなは今の所の少し前の所からやり直しました。
ゴーシュは顔をまっ赤にして 額に汗を出しながら やっと今いわれたところを通りました。
ほっと安心しながら、つづけて弾いていますと 楽長がまた手をぱっとうちました。
「セロっ。糸が合わない。困るなあ。ぼくはきみに
ドレミファを教えてまでいるひまはないんだがなあ。」
みんなは気の毒そうにして わざとじぶんの譜をのぞき込こんだり
じぶんの楽器をはじいてみたりしています。ゴーシュはあわてて糸を直しました。
これはじつはゴーシュも悪いのですがセロもずいぶん悪いのでした。
「今の前の小節から。はいっ。」
みんなはまたはじめました。ゴーシュも口をまげて一生けん命です。そしてこんどはかなり進みました。
いいあんばいだと思っていると 楽長がおどすような形をして またぱたっと手をうちました。
またかとゴーシュは どきっとしましたが ありがたいことには こんどは別の人でした。
ゴーシュはそこでさっきじぶんのとき みんながしたように わざとじぶんの譜へ眼を近づけて
何か考えるふりをしていました。

For the past few years, companies around the world have been testing out a four-day work week. In many cases, this means allowing employees to spread their work hours over four days instead of five.

Many of these tests have been successful, and people in the UK may soon get more rights to ask for a four-day work week.

Since April, employees in the UK have had the right to ask for more flexible working conditions, but companies do not have to agree to it.

But under the government's plans to increase flexibility for workers, companies may have to offer flexible working hours from the day the employee starts working — although it's not yet clear what this means.

"One possibility is for the government to make it more difficult for employers to refuse such requests, because at present it is quite easy for them to do so," Charlie Thompson, an employment lawyer who works for law company Stewarts, told Sky News.

Education Minister Jacqui Smith said more flexibility could be better for productivity.

"You're still doing the same amount of work, but perhaps you're doing it in a way that enables you, for example, to need less child care, to spend more time with your family, to do other things, that encourages more people into the workplace," she told LBC Radio.

But not everyone is happy with the idea of a four-day work week, and some tests weren't as successful as others.

UK supermarket Asda tested a four-day week, but changed back to the five-day week after staff said the longer work days were too demanding.

Another supermarket, Morrisons, also tried a four-day work week at its head office, but to make it work, staff sometimes had to work on Saturdays, which they weren't happy about.

先日（せんじつ）、私は箱根（はこね）に行った。箱根は神奈川（かながわ）県（けん）にある国内（こくない）屈指（くっし）の温泉街（おんせんがい）だ。残念（ざんねん）なことに、私は雨女なので、旅行（りょこう）に行く時はよく雨が降（ふ）る。当日（とうじつ）も例（れい）に漏（も）れず、雨が降っていた。

大雨（おおあめ）が降る中（なか）、箱根湯本（はこねゆもと）駅（えき）から宿泊（しゅくはく）する旅館（りょかん）まで歩いた。途中（とちゅう）で旦那（だんな）と箱根まんじゅうを食べたり、晩酌（ばんしゃく）用（よう）のお酒（さけ）やおつまみを買ったりした。旅館に到着（とうちゃく）後（ご）、貸切（かしきり）露天風呂（ろてんぶろ）に入ったのだが、この時の雨はなんだかとても美しく思えた。雨と木々（きぎ）の香（かお）りに包（つつ）まれながら入る温泉（おんせん）は、なんと清々（すがすが）しいことか。いつもなら憎（にく）いと思う雨も、こんな日には悪（わる）くない。
