#25 The Malayalam Error Clinic — 15 Mistakes Nobody Will Ever Correct You On
Description
Class 25. The error clinic — the fifteen mistakes every learner makes, diagnosed and cured.
AN UNCOMFORTABLE TRUTH, AND THE REASON THIS CLASS EXISTS
Malayalis will almost never correct your Malayalam. They will understand you, smile warmly, and answer your question — and your error will survive unchallenged for years. That is politeness, and for a returning diaspora speaker it is a trap.
TWO PRACTICAL MOVES FIRST
1. Ask ONE trusted relative, explicitly, to correct you. Nobody volunteers a correction in Kerala; almost everybody will give one if asked.
2. Record yourself once a month. You will hear your own errors long before anyone mentions them.
The cure is not understanding — you will understand every fix here in ten seconds. The cure is repetition.
THE BIGGEST ONE — AN ENGLISH BRAIN VS A MALAYALAM BRAIN
Learners say ഞാൻ തണുപ്പാണ് (njaan thanuppaanu) "I am cold". Wrong.
Correct: എനിക്ക് തണുപ്പുണ്ട് (enikku thanuppundu) — "to me there is cold".
English treats cold as an identity, something you ARE. Malayalam treats feelings as experienced, not performed. They happen to you.
THE RULE BEHIND THE WHOLE GROUP
If the thing happens TO you rather than being done BY you, the subject is dative. Cold, hunger, fear, happiness, possession, ability, understanding — all take എനിക്ക്.
But do not overcorrect. Verbs of doing keep the plain subject: ഞാൻ പഠിക്കുന്നു is right; എനിക്ക് പഠിക്കുന്നു is not.
Action takes ഞാൻ. Experience takes എനിക്ക്.
MORE CURES
• It is എന്റെ (ente), never "ante". The whole first-person family starts with e — ente, enikku, ennodu.
• Speech verbs take -ഒട് (odu), not -ode: എന്നോട് പറയൂ.
• Possessive is -ഉടെ: അവളുടെ, not avale. If "of" or apostrophe-s fits in English, you need ude.
• Four phantom future forms circulate in learner notebooks that no native speaker has ever produced. Delete them.
