Being Polite and Indirect in Malayalam | Spoken Malayalam #080
Description
English builds politeness with "please", "could you", "would you mind" and lots of "thank you". Malayalam builds it differently: with small softening words, the choice of "you", the shape of the verb, and a habit of saying no without saying no. The typical mistake is translating "please" word for word: ദയവായി വെള്ളം തരൂ (dayavaayi vellam tharoo) = Kindly give water.
In this episode:
• Onnu: the magic "just"
• Aamo: "could you?"
• Commands: three levels
• Asking about plans: varunnundo and varumo
• Saying no without saying no
• Thanks and sorry in real life
• An invented scene: at leela chechi's house
• Language bridge
• Practice
• Self-check questions with answers
