What Malayali names carry instead are initials — and those initials are not middle names. They usually stand for the house name and the father's name. A name written as two initials followed by a given name typically expands to: house, father, then the person's own name. WHAT THIS MEANS IN PRACTICE Do not assume the last element of a Malayali name is a family name shared with their siblings and parents — very often it is not. Do not alphabetise Kerala names by the final word without checking. Do not ask "what is your surname?" — ask what their initials stand for, which is a friendlier question and gets you the real answer.
