Community Tutor🇹🇭 Thai Culture!
Why do Thai people press their hands together like this? 🙏🏻This is called a “Wai” (ไหว้)!
👉 It’s more than just “hello” — it shows:
-Respect
-Politeness
-Gratitude
📍 When do we use the Wai?
✔️ Saying hello / goodbye
✔️ Saying thank you or sorry
✔️ Showing respect to elders, teachers, or bosses
✔️ Greeting monks 🙏🏻
💡 Important rules:
1.The HIGHER your hands, the MORE respect you show
2.Younger people usually wai first
3.You DON’T need to wai:
-Young children 👶
-Service staff (they usually wai YOU first)
⚠️ Common mistake:Foreigners sometimes wai EVERYONE 😅→ It’s polite, but not always necessary!
✨ Easy phrase to try:“สวัสดีครับ/ค่ะ” (sà-wàt-dee khráp/khâ) + Wai 🙏🏻
🙏🏻Have you ever used the Wai in Thailand?
