The danger of moral victories

It is a fact in Chile nowadays that we celebrate our moral victories more often, especially in sport competition. But what is that supposed to mean?  Second, third or any position that is not first place is considered a success. Probably our lack of achievement has led us to this point, where the only thing that really matters is how brave we fought in the event.

From a certain point of view, it is not completely wrong to recognize people who have sacrificed for the glory of our country, even though they didn’t exactly win a title or something similar. However, what happens when we forget our winners, and instead remember too often another character that actually lost a battle? This is when we have to see our history not in the sports field, but in something even bigger, in our society.

Last May 21st we celebrated the naval combat of Iquique, a battle which all Chileans remember because the captain Arturo Prat died gallantly in a unequal fight. So we remember him as our greatest hero in our history, but no one remembers the name of Carlos Condell, a soldier of the same rank who, with his wooden ship, defeated a Peruvian battleship that was one the most advanced of all South America at that time.

Probably the way we are now is just a reflection or result of our behavior in our history.
