"Burn the midnight oil" comes from the days before electricity, when people would literally burn oil lamps late into the night to keep working after dark. Today we use it whenever someone stays up late to finish work or study.
Examples:
"I've been burning the midnight oil all week trying to finish this project before the deadline."
"She burned the midnight oil studying for her exam and passed with top marks."
