Yes! When you are sad, you are feeling blue. Elvis Presley has a famous song called "Blue Christmas." The main lyric is "I'll have a blue Christmas without you, I'll be so blue just thinking about you." Another synonym is "gloomy."

We use colors for a lot of emotions
Red - anger and sometimes love
White - purity and anger
Green - envy or jealousy
Blue - gloomy or sad
Grey - depressed
Black - hatred
There are probably others!! For red and white, the correct emotion. From the list above depends on context.

If you feel blue, it means, that you are feeling unwell, unhappy. This bad feeling can last longer time and could be grown into depression. The phrase"to feel blue" is probably a reference to having a fit of the blue devils, meaning 'down' spirits, depression and sadness. An early reference to "the blues" can be found in George Colman's farce Blue devils, a farce in one act (1798). A lot of musicians have used this phrase in lyrics of their songs. For example:http://youtu.be/SsE8Q1asSlw
