Some characters actually look like the things they represent. These are called pictographs. For example: 木 (mù) is tree 目 (mù) is eye Most pictographs can also be used as radicals in other characters. For instance, 木 (tree) appears in characters related to wood or plants: 林 (lín —forest), tree plus tree, many trees, so forest 桥 (qiáo — bridge), made of wood 桃 (táo — peach), grow on trees There's also another type: phonetic-semantic characters. In these, one part hints at the meaning, and the other part hints at the pronunciation. Take 桃 (táo) as an example: 木 (tree/plants) → 桃táo peach 辶 (walk/movement) → 逃táo to escape 扌(hand) → 挑tiāo to pick 足 (foot ) → 跳tiào to jump 目 (eye) → 眺tiào to look into the distance See the pattern?
