Wechat is definitely the most popular app in my country. Almost everyone uses it every day/on a daily basis. It can be used in many ways, such as a payment method, a video player, a chat, or a platform where we can play multiplayer games. If you visit China, you will find that over 90 percent of the people around you are using Wechat.
About one mouth ago, Wechat still had its most powerful use in the feature of showing whether you got Omicron or not depending on the colour of a code within the app. If it was yellow or red, it meant that you have gone (to) places where the virus was spreading, then you needed to quarantine until you tested negative. Green, on the other hand, was safe. Why did the government choose this app to do this? Because almost everyone has this app installed on their smartphones. Now, the app doesn't do this any more.
The flip side is that almost everything can be done via Wechat, including meeting people and day to day interactions with friends, workmates, etc. which can lead to social isolation and the development of phobias related to social life. Many people like doing everything behind the screen and are afraid of communicating with others face to face. This phenomenon is abnormal.
