Grades encourage students to work harder at school. Do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion. It is critically important that we review the concept of grades in most schools. Personally, I believe grades can give a false feeling of knowledge based on results more than focusing on the learning process which is much more complex than assigning numbers to people according to the number of a correct answers in a test. I feel this way for two reasons, which I will explore in the following essay. To begin with, grades are bad indicators of learning. Bad students can memorize question examples which might show up on the exam. Therefore, instead of thinking how to solve the problem, some students can rely on memorization only. However, reasoning and finding new ways to solve same problems should be encouraged. My personal experience is a compelling illustration of this. During the college even though I studied hard by reading different books from professor’s recommended books which, I believe, were outdated I could not solve most of the questions of an exam because they were covered on those books and not on the ones I was using. However, on the following exam I decided not to study and memorized questions and answers of the book. Of course, at the time, I did not learn anything of content however passed the course with a high score. Furthermore, in competitive societies grades can lead to depression and even discourage students to work hard as some can feel there is a gap between their scores to peers scores. For instance, some kids which moved to a new school recently can have difficulties to follow classes and low grades can bring their mood down and even influence social interactions in a hard moment as they are trying to adapt to new conditions and make new friends.
