My native language is Japanese, so I help them learn Japanese while they help me with my English. Recently I have been impressed by how difficult it would be for English speakers to get used to katakana English words（カタカナ英語）. There are so many katakana words which come from English in today's Japanese. What often confuses English-speaking learners of Japanese is that the pronunciation of katakana English words tends to be greatly different from that of original English words. One example is coffee. In Japanese it is called "コーヒー", which is pronounced as "Kōhī". It would be very difficult for Japanese people with little ability of English to be sure that "coffee" is "コーヒー". Therefore English-speaking people who learn Japanese have to practice the Japanese pronunciation of katakana words in order to be able to make themselves understood when they talk with Japanese people with little English ability. Therefore I often help my partners to pronounce katakana English words in Japanese. It often gives me a strange feeling that I teach English speaking people the pronunciation of words which originally came from English. It looks like a kind of reimport, doesn't it?
