You can substitute it with "in the process of" and it's usually followed by an infinitive. t's the French equivalent of present continuous.

Je suis en train de chanter.
I am (in the process of) singing (right now).

J'étais en train d'écrire ma thèse quand le tremblement de terre a frappé.
I was (in the middle of) writing my thesis when the earthquake struck.

There is also "être en cours de", which has a passive voice meaning, like

La maison est en cours d'aménagement.

The house is being renovated.
