Does iTalki Work as a Language Exchange? I feel like every time I try and have a conversation with somebody they cancel or don't reply.  Yes, I can find plenty of people to write with but I clearly say in my profile I need help with conversation and speaking.  When it comes to having a face to face conversation only 5-10% of the people on here are serious.  I have offered so many times to Skype and people make excuses like "oh I can't tonight but maybe tomorrow" and then they don't reply.  I don't feel like the problem is me, but maybe it is.  I've only had maybe 3 Skype sessions among the 50+ people I've contacted.  What has your experience been like?

It is very difficult to find the right fit. A language partner who has a similar level, similar goals, similar interests and with whom you just feel comfortable with. Time zones add to the difficulty. Also, many people like to write but feel too shy to talk. While I'm not shy, it's very difficult for me to set up Skype sessions due to my busy work schedule and the fact that I have three kids. So, I only offer video sessions, when I'm 100% sure that I want to speak to that person. In general, I also prefer to write or exchange voice or video messages. It's easier to organise. And about the profile: unfortunately, most people don't read the profile.

If you can afford it, you should just book an appointment with a community tutor who's a native speaker. That person will show.

You need to be patient. People are busy and as Miriam said, there's also the time zone problem and goals fit.
A part from the aforementioned reasons, Skype call require a bit of trust between the two parts. My technique to gain trust is to be honest (making a complete presentation of myself), polite (don't ask Skype ID or Whatsapp the first time), and offer my help to practice French or Spanish. Many times, it pays and the language exchange partners often come to suggest me to schedule a Skype talking after exchanging texts messages through Italki.
As we have already common grounds, it is more simple to talk or to continue talking with video.
I am relatively new at Italki, but I can tell you that I am having every week the opportunity to talk through Skype with at least one English native speaker.

Hi Brandon, it’s a shame. I thought that only people who spoke „minor“ languages would have a problem, while you are a native anglophone and want to learn Spanish, you have a whole continent of Spanish speaking people in the same time zone.

Do not give up.

just in case you missed it, here is an italki member that should fit.

Thanks for the feedback guys.  SHL I know about the tutoring services and I agree that I should pay if I want to practice my skills reliably.  This discussion wasn't really about that but the fact that so many people offer to do a two way exchange but back out.  I was wondering if that is the norm.
