Can someone explain me which is the function of a 'よ' in the end of a sentence?

”よ”is more soft

for example

i ate 食べた(Tabeta) or 食べたよ(Tabetayo)

"よ" is use for friend and family.

but not use for other. because it is not formal word.

but not dirty word
