I've been looking for some awesome German singers and lyricists to motivate me to learn German. I enjoy melancholic and passionate songs such as the ones by Johny Cash, The National, Tom Waits, Bright Eyes etc.

Maybe try Anna Depenbusch...I like the lyrics! But they're probably not always easy to understand, depending on your level, since she uses idioms and puns quite a lot. But won't hurt to try :)
