"What's your favorite language?" This is probably one of the most common questions in any language-learning venue. Unfortunately, the opposite question doesn't get asked as often.
Just as we all have languages we like, we also have languages we dislike. For me, it's a matter of whether I like how the language sounds or not. When I say "sound," I'm mean the general or characteristic timbre or resonance of the speakers' voice.
If I don't like how the language sounds, I probably won't bother learning it. As a general rule, I don't like languages which I perceive as being too nasal (i.e. having an overall nasal resonance); for example, Brazilian Portuguese.
This is not a value judgement about the people who speak that language or their culture. It's just a preference or taste. Also, just as food tastes change, so do language tastes. The language you hate today, might be your favorite language tomorrow.
So, I'm curious to know what language(s) you guys currently dislike and why. What would need to change for you to like that language? Do you ever conceive of such language becoming your favorite language?
I think Spanish is a very beautiful language and it is easier to learn Italian when you already knew Spanish. I just started learning Italian and at the same time still keep doing Spanish. I can see a very fast progress on my Italian. I guess the easiest language to learn is the language that you like and that is similar to what language you already knew.
Tastes differ. I like German very much. When I hear German I am in a good mood, it keeps me happy. I like Polish with its hushing sounds.
I agree with Nastya that German sounds very strong. It makes my ears hurt. My daughter loves it though, and is learning it on Duolingo. I make her use her headphones because it gives me a headache to hear it continually.
I think the language I cannot stand is Klingon! (I realize it is a made-up language, but there are people who really have devoted their time in learning it.) It is just ugly - there is no other word for it! http://www.kli.org/tlh/sounds.html
I don't like the pronunciation of Arabic, I have throat ache when I hear Arabic. I don't like Spanish because of its sound [th], the sound [th] sounds euphonically in English, but not in Spanish.
@Bobcat77 all languages are unique but some of them...you just want to turn off sound when people speak. :D
