History - Gereja Katolik Santo Fidelis Sejiram
The history of the reconstruction the building of the site (situs) “Gereja (Church) Katolik Santo Fidelis Sejiram” cannot be separated from efforts of a Jesuit missioner, Pastor H. Looymans SJ (the first missioner for Dayak people), who firstly taught Catholic in Semitau village in 1890. Unfortunately, the mission located in Semitau, was unsuccessful because many Dayak people did not live in Semitau but lived in hinterland around the village.
Based on information and data in parish’s building, in 1892, Pastor H. Looymans were picked up from Semitau by the three brothers (Babar, Bantan and Unang) who came from Sejiram. Pastor Looymans begun his mission in Sejiram that noted in parish’s book dated on 3 October 1898. Location of his mission was at the bank of river Seberuang where the site of “Gereja Katolik Santo Fidelis Sejiram” now stands.
Generally, the reconstruction of church in West Kalimantan is almost resembled that consists of wood construction. Architecture of “Gereja Katolik Santo Fidelis Sejiram” combines culture of Western and West Kalimantan. The building of “Gereja Katolik Santo Fidelis Sejiram” now is the oldest church in Sintang Diocese and the building was built in 1920 as the third reconstruction of the church that had been fired up three times. The reconstruction of the church does not change the structure and width of the first church.
In 1892, the first building of the church that was built by Pasteur H. Looymans SJ, who cooperated with some local citizen, had been fired up in 1905 and had been renovated in 1906 by the missioners of Order of Friars Minor Capuchin (O.F.M. Cap) who came to Sejiram exchanged the Jesuit missioners that moved to Padang. From 1906 to 1913, the Capuchin missioners only focused on their tourney that maintained to Benua Martinus in 1913. Then in 1914, the church had been fired up again and renovated in the same year, and the source of the fire that destroyed the church for three times has never known until now. Finally, in 1920, the missioners of O.F.M. Cap reconstructed a permanent church that now still exists.
Even though the church has many times been reconstructed, it does not less the existence of the site of “Gereja Katolik Santo Fidelis Sejiram” identity as a Catholic’s sacred place for praying and the condition of the site of “Gereja Katolik Santo Fidelis Sejiram” now has been advanced for years.
