Some people think the media should not report details of crimes to the public Topic:Some people think the media should not report details of crimes to the public. To what extent do you agree or disagree? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My essay: Rarely a day goes by that the media does not report an incident of violent crime such as theft, muggings or murder. These are reported via broadcast, digital media (internet website or social site) and print and the reporting is often in excruciating detail. For fear of causing negative effects on the public, some people argue that the government should demand the mass media to omit the relevant details of crimes. Speaking from me, I cannot agree with it more. From my point of view, there are a couple of reasons to support this view. First, a large number of such news has filled our daily life. Those exhaustive new reports often have a little help to build people’s precaution consciousness but only to scare them. People who are surrounded by all kinds of criminal news in a long term are more likely to lose the sense of security. The loss of sense of security will incur the distrust between strangers and strengthen the social alienation in further. In addition to this, the release of criminal details will deprive the victims of dignity and privacy, undoubtedly. Today many mass media are often regardless of the feelings of victims and add relevant details as a selling point in order to jack up their newspaper circulations or television ratings. This behavior will remind the victim that what the criminals have done to them and cause them another hurt. In sum, some restrictions should be carried out to improve the way of reporting criminal news. Those restrictions will not prevent reporting of violent crime but make it not so prominent and it is also a good way to protect the victims from further mental damage.
