Neither is correct. Say "I thought you were making more of an effort."

We need to place "more" in a different place. This is commonly heard: I thought you would make more of an effort. I thought you were making more of an effort. The more would not come any other place. This is because it has been said this way so much, that if sounds wrong other ways - even if it is following grammar rules.
