What is the difference between U.S. New England accent and the main British accent? What is the difference between U.S. New England non-rhotic accents and the Standard British accent (RP)? It seems that most Americans treat the New England non-rhotic accents (e.g. Rhode Island) as non-educated and low-class: "Why would you want to learn to talk like a New Yawka?" However, the majority of American seems to treat Queen's English accent as educated and high-class ("posh"). Which sounds make the difference between them? The reason of this question is that I learn British Received Pronounciation at school in Russia. I also saw some different American films, e.g. with Woody Allen. So I am afraid that Americans might take me for a foreigher who is faking a funny New York accent. It is not the desired impression.

A New Zealand Accent sounds more like Australian which is altogether different from British. It's hard to explain in writing because as a native English speaker, i just hear the difference automatically. So You just have to train your ears to see if you can hear the difference, try watching a short clip of BBC News and then Watch a short clip of New Zealand/Australian news and see if can hear a little difference

It is a very hard question to answer, the main difference is the pronunciation, also the tone of the voice. Another thing to take in to consideration is the use of words, for example here we say ''pavement'' in the USA they say ''sidewalk'' A Colombian friend of mine who is learning English has a CD that she listens to, on the CD they translate from Spanish to English, they read out the text first in British English and then in American English. If you could listen to a CD like that, you would notice a big difference between the two accents.
