How to use adverbs and adjectives in Vietnamese? Hello, everyone! I would like to know how to use adverbs and adjectives in Vietnamese. Where they should stand etc. (Also about the comparison of adjectives) I will be so happy if you translate these examples: The weather is hot. Hot weather is better than cold. I like hot weather. She is the best teacher. She writes hieroglyphs very carefully. Thank you so much in advance!

Hello Tim, I appreciate that you like learning Vietnamese and trying to improve it like this. In my opinion, in Vietnamese, we use adv. and adj. as they are the same. We just can tell them apart when putting them in concrete contexts. They are used to modify nouns, actions, etc like in English. However, they USUALLY stand AFTER the "thing" which they modify. 1. The weather is hot. -----> Thời tiết nóng (nực). * nóng nực is called "từ láy" (repeat-words) in Vietnamese, it repeats sound or rhyme of the word which stands before it. (Thời tiết: weather, nóng (nực): hot) 2. Hot weather is better than cold. -----> Thời tiết nóng thì tốt hơn thời tiết lạnh. (you can understand that "thì" means "is" (to be)) 3. I like hot weather. -----> Tôi thích thời tiết nóng. (thích: like, thời tiết: weather, nóng: hot) 4. She is the best teacher. -----> Cô ấy là giáo viên tốt nhất. (Cô ấy: she, là: is, giáo viên: teacher, tốt nhất: the best) 5. She writes hieroglyphs very carefully. -----> Cô ấy viết chữ tượng hình rất cẩn thận. (viết: write, chữ tượng hình: hieroglyphs, rất: very, cẩn thận: carefully)

Hi Tim, I would like to translate the examples first. The weather is hot. (weather = thời tiết, hot = nóng) 1. Thời tiết thì nóng. ("is" means "thì" in Vietmese, we can omit in this sentence, it is optional) 2. Thời tiết nóng (used often) 3. Trời nóng ("Trời" means "God", however, in this case "trời" means "weather" and this is a used popularly in daily spaeking Hot weather is better than cold. (Cold = lạnh, better = hay hơn, tốt hơn) 1. Trời nóng thì hay hơn trời lạnh 2. Trời nóng thì tốt hơn trời lạnh 3. Thời tiết nóng thì hay hơn thời tiết lạnh 4. Thời tiết nóng thì tốt hơn thời tiết lạnh Good = Hay, tốt Better = Hay hơn, tốt hơn Best = hay nhất, tốt nhất Bad = xấu, tồi, tệ, tồi tệ Worse = xấu hơn, tồi hơn, tồi tệ hơn Worst = xấu nhất, tồi nhất, tồi tệ nhất beautiful = đẹp more beautiful than = đẹp hơn most beautiful = đẹp nhất I like hot weather (like=thích) Tôi thích trời (thời tiết) nóng She is the best teacher (She = cô ấy, bà ấy, em ấy, nó) teacher= giáo viên, cô giáo) Cô ấy là giáo viên tốt nhất. Cô ấy: intended for general female (Ms) Bà ấy: intended for Mrs. or female who older than the speaker Em ấy: intended for both male and female who younger than the speaker Nó: intended for both male and female who younger than the speaker but this is not a polite word She writes hieroglyphs very carefully. (write=viết, hieroglyphs = mật mã, biểu tượng, careful and carefully = cẩn thận, very = rất) Cô ấy viết mật mã (biểu tượng) rất cẩn thận. In Vietnamese, adverb and adjective are the same spelling. Mostly, adverbs stand behind verbs and adjectives. Adjectives stand in front of nouns.
