In the jar there was a ____ which looked like jam. A. solid B. substance C. material D. powder Note: I am wondering why A and C are less preferred choices compared to B. I know D is obviously not the right answer since powder does not look like jam at all.

Because neither solid nor powder looks like jam. We have to fill that blank which makes sense. Material is a broader term, hence among options it is better to use 'substance'. I hope that it would help you.
