Another strange sentence. What could it mean? "So much for the great middle class, to which, if you innocently credit people’s descriptions of their own status, almost 80 percent of our population belongs." This is one more sentence which is difficult to understand correctly. Can anyone help me and re-phrase it into more understandable English?

"So much for," is a way to say that something is not successful or useful. "Great," is being used ironically here. So, the message is, "The 'middle class' is a fake idea, especially if you consider that 80% of all people say that is what they are.

Я плохо разбираюсь в английском, поэтому мне понятнее: если доверять, что о себе говорят люди, то 80% окажутся средним классом. Ну, и для среднего класса это, конечно, много.
