Sri Lestari
Could anyone explain this paragraph? His feeble flirtatious instincts had been crushed before, but never so mercilessly. He felt cheap and ill-used, as if someone had taken advantage of him. When a drummer had been knocking about in little drab towns and crawling accross the wintry country in dirty smoking-cars, was he to be blamed if, when he chanced upon a fine human creature, he suddenly wished himself more of a man?

"He felt cheap and ill-used." He was just a drummer "knocking about in drab towns". Life was not treating him well. He had lost his confidence. So when he met someone nice, he was worried that he might not be good enough for that person. That is why he wished he was in a better situation - "more of a man".
