When you are referring to a non-physical feature, you could say: "they take after their father / mother" The easiest thing to say in every situation is "he is just like his father" / her eyes are just like her father's". I like your expression better. "Spicy" is not negative, just descriptive. If a dish had too much of any spice (including chillis), then it would be "too spicy".
