Is this sentence OK? Or how would you say? (an advice etc.) I needed to say it to you as a friend of yours.And this; I needed to say it to you as your friend.

For simple past? I think it's better to say : I needed to say it to you as you are my friend. or just simply replace "as" with "because". Both are acceptable.
